Colleague engagement is a key measure of success within our strategy.
The 2024 Your Voice survey launched on Tuesday 4 June and remained open until 2 July 2024, giving colleagues the opportunity to let us know what matters to them most. Thank you to those who took the time to respond and give us your feedback. You can find a high level summary of the results here.
With 59% of colleagues sharing their views, we now have significant insights to understand the effectiveness of actions taken from the 2022 survey.
Our overall staff engagement score is now 70%, an increase of 1% since 2022.
We have also seen improvements across the themes, and an increase in colleagues believing that action will be taken as a result of the survey (+7%).
Although we have seen improvements, the areas of focus identified from the 2022 survey will remain as we need to do more to drive improvements and support change in these areas at a University level:
- Enablement/Collaboration: 32% of colleagues agreed with the statement “Different parts of the University work well together”. This group will continue to focus on supporting and embedding successful collaboration across the University and has been broadened to include leadership as a key enabler.
- Workload/Wellbeing: all five questions under this theme improved between 3% and 6% and we are still committed to identifying obstacles that prevent colleagues from working effectively and in a way that is best for their wellbeing. There are clear differences between academic and professional services responses in this area and this group will be exploring this further.
- Managing underperformance while recognising great performance: we have seen a 5% increase in colleagues believing that poor performance is dealt with effectively and 64% of colleagues feel that they are valued within their own School/Service (+5%). However there has been a decrease in colleagues feeling valued at a University level (-7%) so we still have more work to do here.
SLT also identified other areas/themes that might require further consideration and will continue to review these alongside the responses to the open questions over the next few weeks.
At a local level, your leadership teams are currently reviewing individual School/Service and team results which will support the refinement and further development of local action plans. An overview of your School/Service results will be shared with you shortly.
We all have a key role in improving the colleague experience and colleagues are encouraged to get actively involved in identifying and implementing actions locally to drive improvements within their School/Service. We can see from the increase in ‘colleagues believing that action will be taken as a result of the survey’, that local actions make a positive difference.
This was our last full colleague survey before moving to a continuous listening approach, measuring colleague feedback on a more regular basis. We are currently working through what this approach will look like for us and will share further details of this with you, at a later date.
