Digital Extracts Service: guidelines for staff requesting materials
The Digital Extracts Service (DES) offers staff the opportunity to make recommended readings available in electronic format via Moodle, to named groups of students for set periods.
If you want to make material available through DES, you should first discuss your requirements with your Information Services Advisor. To find the Information Services Advisor (or Subject Librarian) for your School, please see My Librarian.
For more information about the digitisation scheme please see our Copyright Guidance LibGuide page on Digital copying for Moodle.
The DES Form is available by clicking here.
When we receive your request, Library staff will find the most cost-effective way of providing the extract. If there are other ways of accessing the information, your ISA will discuss these with you before proceeding.
In some cases, copyright clearance has to be obtained directly from the publisher(s) before digitisation can proceed. Times to obtain clearance vary and may take up to six weeks, occasionally longer. Therefore it is crucial that requests are made well in advance of the actual requirement.
The CLA has worked with representatives of publishers and Universities UK, GuildHE and individual HEIs to publish a Good Practice Guide on creating coursepacks.
