DTLE's
Quick Guide on Artificial Intelligence, Student Learning and Assessment (2023)
Guidance to share with students.
DLTE's Gen AI and Assessment Toolkit can be
adapted for use with students, and now includes a flow chart for deciding on
appropriate Grammarly use (last update November 2024).” Colleagues have found adapting the following slide helpful to communicate with students about what is, and is not, permissible with AI.
DLTE's Assessment Coversheet with Declaration on AI use, now includes an optional line about Grammarly (last update November 2024), which can be changed or deleted as appropriate. If you are concerned about Turnitin identifying text in the coversheet, you can create a separate Moodle submission area just for the coversheet using the Assignment tool without Turnitin (see Assignment activity - MoodleDocs). Most schools are using this or their own version of a coversheet to ask students to declare AI use. Please contact your school for advice best practice in your school.
In
DLTE's MSc Blended and Online Education, students were given the following guidelines for their use of generative AI, which can be adapted.

Artificial Intelligence Tools (napier.ac.uk)
We held a workshop for staff in October 2024 on colleagues' experiences of talking to students about Generative AI use, including use of the resources above such as the traffic lights and cover sheet. Dr Cameron Graham gave some initial information, followed by a case study by Dr Janis MacCallum (School of Applied Sciences), and a case study by Dr Jyoti Bhardwaj (School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment).
DLTE has been conducting research with students about their attitudes and experiences of generative AI since Spring 2023. The following video is an overview of the first findings from June in 2023.
Staff use of Generative AI.
Any use of AI by ENU staff must be done so responsibly. Please read the university Interim Guidance for Staff on the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Large Language Models (LLMs) to Protect Personal and Corporate Information.
In 2023, DLTE ran a series of webinars for colleagues 'Conversations on AI', with the Padlet
Strategies for Learning, Teaching & Assessment in the age of AI. (padlet.org) as a space to ask questions and share resources.
In 2024, DLTE started to run a regular short course 'Beginner's Guide to Generative AI' on Moodle. The next run is planned for May 2024, please contact
DLTE@napier.ac.uk to register.
To test your knowledge on generative AI, you can take the Digital Skills in AI and generative AI question set in
the Discover Tool for staff. There is also an AI question set aimed at students which can be accessed through
Digital Skills (napier.ac.uk)
In February 2024, the university Education and Student Experience Committee approved a proposal to establish a cross-university Advisory Group on Generative AI in Education. This page will be updated with further details about this group.
A note about AI detection tools:
Edinburgh Napier University does not subscribe or recommend the use of AI detection tools on student work. Detection tools have been found to be inaccurate and prone to false positives. See the advice from JISC:
AI Detection - Latest Recommendations - Artificial intelligence (jiscinvolve.org).
Please do not submit student work to a third party website or app as students have not given their permission.
