AV Installation for SOCLAB

The School of Computing’s Cyber Academy recently opened a Security Operations Centre in collaboration with IT security company Satisnet.

The Information Services AV & Learning Spaces team liaised with SoC, Properties and Facilities department and an external contractor to deliver high-quality AV systems to enable students to learn about advanced methods such as malware analysis, penetration testing, cryptography and incident response within a safe environment.

The SOCLAB installation consisted of three main areas: a training room, incident response room, and a breakout/observation/meeting space.

The training room follows the AV & Learning Spaces model for the modern classroom with a compact teaching desk featuring touchscreen control system, matrix input switching, wireless BYOD interfaces and visualizer, all connected to an 86” 4K interactive display.  In addition, the training room features two additional 55” displays which can show a variety of content, from the BYOD interfaces to feeds from the University’s OneLan digital signage system, including IPTV channels.

The incident response room features an innovative six-display (in 2x3 arrangement) video wall in front of a desk area which contains four PCs for use by incident responders, and an HDMI input to provide laptop connectivity. A touchscreen controller allows the user to send sources to the video wall in various configurations: for example in ‘video wall mode’ a single device can be shown as a large image over four of the six displays, with up to two further sources shown on the remaining displays; alternatively, the user can choose to have separate sources shown on each of the six displays.  Additional content from the OneLan digital signage system can also be shown; this includes news channels and a real-time map of global cyber-attacks.  Audio from any of the above sources can be routed to a discrete loudspeaker system.

The breakout/observation/meeting space contains a single 55” display with wall-mounted controller, HDMI connectivity, and a wireless BYOD interface.
