I became an academic and study skills adviser through facilitating
writing workshops for PhD students and academic staff while working as a
researcher on various projects at Edinburgh Napier University and the
University of Edinburgh (from Adult Literacy to Irish theatre to Intangible
Cultural Heritage).
My first degree, in Interior Design, was taken after a career as a
graphics and exhibition designer, then studying for a Doctorate (in
Representations of Scottish cultural identity and devolution) allowed me to
develop my research and writing skills. As a student several times over and from
a 'non-traditional' background, I understand how hard it is for many of our
students who juggle studying alongside several jobs and the many other
responsibilities of 'real life' so, while I support all students (and staff)
at all levels, I have a particular interest in supporting those from what are
currently termed 'wider participation' backgrounds.
