​​I joined Edinbu​​rgh Napier University in Summer 2023 as an Academic Skills Adviser. In my current role, I support students with all aspects of their academic skills development. I also collaborate with staff creating materials and delivering integrated and open workshops, particularly focussing on connections with the School of Applied Sciences. I was awarded my PhD in Human Geography from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2018. I have worked as a Lecturer in Geography in several UK HE institutions, and I have experience of teaching, research, and pastoral responsibilities. I am interested in better understanding how universities can support students to make the most of their studies, particularly in the context of challenging circumstances such as the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and the cost of living crisis.

I joined Edinburgh Napier in 2017 as Quality & Standards Manager and have held various roles in higher education in the UK and overseas since 1999.
                           

I have a particular interest in student engagement and student-staff partnership. I lead on student involvement in our quality processes and work closely with colleagues in the University and ENSA to take forward student engagement initiatives. I am also a member of the University’s PDT Forum, constituted to enhance personal development tutoring at the University and to support the University’s Personal Development Tutors (PDTs).
                           

​As Quality & Standards link for the School of Applied Sciences, I supporedt the School through Institution-led review and the approval of new programmes. Together with colleagues in the Quality & Standards Team I provided advice and guidance on the University’s Quality Framework and Academic Regulations​.
                           

​I am a QAA ELIR Reviewer and member of Scotland’s Quality Forum. I represent the University at sparqs Student Engagement Staff Network, am on the Board of UKAT (UK Advising & Tutoring), and participated in the Advance HE Aurora programme (2013/14 cohort). I have a Masters in German from Pennsylvania State University, where I taught undergraduate courses in German language and German cultural studies.

​​John’s main involvement for the Department is as a reviewer and facilitator for ENroute and in the PgCert Teaching & Supporting Learning assessments. His main academic concern nowadays is with the formative development of core skills, the promotion of reflective practice, and self-assessment​. He is also an active reviewer for a number of educational journals. He welcomes any requests for assistance in shaping programmes to develop core abilities, and in preparing papers for publication.

I previously worked at Edinburgh Napier as a research assistant at DLTE from 2014–16. In 2016 I ventured over to New Zealand to embark upon a PhD in social-ecology at Auckland University of Technology, where I received a Commonwealth Scholarship.                                      


Just over three years later, I have returned to DLTE in a new position as a part-time lecturer in Education. In this role, I play an active part in the delivery of the International Learning and Teaching Module in Higher Education (international).                                      

My research interests are in active learning, action research and student-centred learning approaches. In addition, I continue to engage in ecology and interdisciplinary collaborative work with colleagues internationally.

I am a Associate Professor in the Department of Learning and Teaching Enhancement at Edinburgh Napier University.I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA).                            

                             

I lead the MSc in Blended and Online Education, and lecture on the ​Postgraduate Certificate in Learning,Teaching and AssessmentPractice in Higher Education programme.                             

                             

I have led on a number of institutional initiatives, including the Digital Support Partnership project, a cross-university strategic project to support all staff in student engagement in online learning and teaching during the academic year 2020-21 and the short-life working group on Blended Learning in 2022. I am currently engaged in internal and external work on the rapidly developing context of higher education learning, teaching and assessment in the age of generative artificial intelligence.​                            

                             

I have worked in a number of universities in the UK as a learning technologist, academic developer, lecturer and software developer. I am also an experienced theatre director and practitioner, and I like to explore creative approaches to academic development. I am an editor for the journal Research in Learning Technology​.                            

My research interests include the relationship between digital teaching and theory, critical digital pedagogy and open education practices.                            

                             

I am open to applications for PhDs in the areas of digital education, academic practice, higher education, critical digital and AI literacy, and theories of learning and teaching.​​​​​​​​

I joined Edinburgh Napier University in Spring 2022 as an Academic Skills Adviser after working in a variety of teaching and student academic support roles in the UK and USA since 2012.                             

                            

In my current role, I support students with all aspects of their academic skills development. I also collaborate with staff creating materials and delivering integrated and open workshops, particularly focussing on connections with the School of Health and Social Care.                             

                            

I am recently completed a PhD in Linguistics where my research investigates phraseological competence using corpus methods to improve language testing.

CAMERON GRAHAM



                        

​​​​​​​​Cameron Graham is an Associate Professor in DLTE where he leads on the implementation of a the ENhance curriculum framework and approaches to Assessment & Feedback. Cameron also leads the University's Fellowship scheme – ENroute – and is an Advance HE Accreditor. Cameron’s research interests relate to criticality in the academy with a focus on scope of critical thinking, its conceptualisation and how this translates into the curriculum. His doctoral research explored international master's students’ experiences at three UK universities focusing on their conceptualisation, development and application of criticality and adaption to their new contexts of learning. Results from his research provide insights to facilitate international students' successful transitions into and inclusive engagement with the critical practices of UK HE. A key finding from the research was ‘contexts of difference’ which captures students intercultural learning and acts as a key means for students to develop as critical persons, Cameron incorporates these findings within the PgCert TSL which he developed with colleagues and previously lead.

I am a Professor in the Department of Learning and Teaching Enhancement with internationally recognised expertise in higher education, interdisciplinary studies, and science communication. My research concerns the use of poetry and games as creative pedagogies to help address issues of staff and student wellbeing and belonging. My work also uses poetry and games to help develop meaningful dialogues between different groups of people and to help platform the voices of marginalised communities.          


                      

In my current role I help to embed innovative and engaging pedagogy across the University, as part of the Department of Learning and Teaching Enhancement and the Centre for Higher Education Research. I also help to lead on the L&T ENssentials CPD.  If you are interested in finding out more about either developing your practice or scholarship in learning and teaching then please get in touch as I would love to talk to you. ​

Professor Nazira Karodia

Nazira Karodia is Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice Principal Learning & Teaching at Edinburgh Napier University. Nazira has responsibility for strategic leadership in all the areas of learning and teaching , ensuring we provide an unrivalled teaching and learning experience for all our students, giving them the best possible chance of success.

Nazira an academic career spanning over 20 years in Chemistry, STEM education and university leadership. She is a national leader in inclusive curriculum, extending university opportunity and attracting students from marginalized communities. She is passionate that students not only enjoy their university learning but carry into their future lives a passion for further learning, skills enhancement, sustainability, and a commitment to community. In pursuit of this, her focus is on the entire pedagogic experience and student preparation for life.

Nazira studied Chemistry in South Africa and completed her PhD at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. After post-doctoral posts at the University of Florida and at St Andrews, she held a range of academic roles at the University of Bradford and later headed their STEM Programme. She moved to the University of Wolverhampton to be Professor in Science Education, becoming the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering and then Pro Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for leading on the Knowledge Exchange Framework and Concordat, employability, and regional engagement. Her achievements range from regional Directorship of a national higher education STEM project, securing significant funding for skills and regional development work.

Three of our six Schools – The Business School, School of Arts & Creative Industries and School of Applied Sciences – report into Nazira, along with the Department of Learning & Teaching Enhancement. She plays a key role in nurturing, developing, and retaining academic staff.​

I joined DLT​E in June 2023 as a Lecturer in Assessment and Feedback. Prior to this, I held a variety of teaching and research posts in Spain, Saudi Arabia, China, the USA and the UK.  I have a varied academic background with an undergraduate degree in Accounting and Business Law as well as a M.Sc in Applied Linguistics and TESOL, from the University of Stirling, and a professional doctorate (E.dD) in Education from the University of Exeter. This academic background has allowed me to develop knowledge and expertise in developing assessment and curricula which appreciate both disciplinary knowledge and disciplinary discourses.          

                

I have a strong background in teaching and researching academic writing and how this is assessed in higher education contexts. In this respect, my work has been published at Cambridge University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, Springer and Routledge. I have also contributed widely to a number of international journals and currently act as a Co-I and consultant for a number of writing pedagogy/assessment projects internationally and here in the UK. Tayo moved to Edinburgh in 2010 to study towards Masters and PhD qualifications in the Biological Sciences. On completion of his research, he worked in student learning and research support roles including as student engagement lead for the Biomolecular Suite of programmes within the School of Applied Sciences. He currently takes the lead as Academic Skills Manager, Academic Skills contact​ for the Social Science programmes and contributes to the development of critical writing curriculum for some postgraduate programmes in the Schools of Health and Social Care and the Applied Sciences.
              

Tayo also has over four years of experience working in the medical and pharmaceuticals industries. Additionally, he has over a decade of experience as a customer service analyst in the banking industry. While he is currently interested in student engagement strategies and equality in learning, he is open to research collaborations with and in other disciplines.

In my role as Quality & Standards Manager I provide advice and guidance on a range of quality assurance and enhancement issues. I am currently responsible for the University academic regulations and also involved in a range of University working groups and initiatives. I am the Quality and Standards link for the School of Health & Social Care and the School of of Arts and Creative Industries. This link involves supporting and advising the Schools through quality processes and being a member of their School LTA committees. I am also involved in the monitoring, application and development of the University Quality Framework​ and this includes the monitoring and approval of programmes through panel membership.             

              

Through my membership of both the Teaching Quality Forum (TQF) and the Academic Registrar Council Quality Practitioner Group (ARC-QPG), I maintain an active view of quality within the higher education sector.             

           

I am also a clerk to one of the Academic Board sub-committees.

I joined Edinburgh Napier University in 2018 as a programme administrator for the undergraduate Biological Sciences suite of programmes. My previous work has involved support for learning at school age, as a classroom assistant in a Secondary Resource Provision high school in Edinburgh, and as a music instructor.            


I joined DLTE in the summer of 2022 as an Engagement Officer. I am keen to connect with colleagues across the university, to learn about their work, interests, and areas of potential future exploration, in order to promote their work and assist in community building.            


My professional interests are in intersectional inclusion in education, the working world and broader society. I have been co-chair of the staff LGBT+ Network at Edinburgh Napier University since early 2021, and my focus in this role has been on increasing the environment of diversity within our network, in order to welcome a wider range of colleages and provide for their needs.            


I follow the social model of disability and aim to support social development to remove barriers to inclusion, whether based on physical or learning disability, identity based exclusion, neurodiversity or cultural exclusion.

​I am an Institutional Researcher in the Department of Learning and Teaching Enhancement at Edinburgh Napier University. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. My career is marked by a passionate commitment to improving the educational experience for university students, with a focus on critical issues such as student transition, engagement, and retention. My research interests mainly revolve around the transition of university students and how this process informs their identities. I recognise the unique challenges faced by marginalised students, including international students, Black and Global Majority students, mature students, and commuter students, and I am determined to create a more inclusive and equitable learning experience for them. My research not only identifies barriers to success but also seeks practical solutions to overcome them. Additionally, I am interested in using games to diversify the learning environment and enhance understanding and communication among both staff and students.
           


           

Currently, I am leading a research project exploring the awarding gap among UK domiciled undergraduate students, comparing the experiences of White students and their Black and Global Majority counterparts​. I have also recently created the board game "Far From Home," which utilises articulate discussions and role-play to foster empathy among university staff for international students. I manage the Quality & Standards Team in the Department for Learning & Teaching Enhancement and lead on matters relating to quality assurance and enhancement of taught and credit-bearing provision in the University. I hold a Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE) for my role in supporting teaching and learning.      

I have been providing professional support and guidance on matters relating to academic quality since 2009. Prior to that, I worked at the School of Education at Durham University where I provided professional support to the School’s postgraduate provision and research office. I represent the University on Scotland’s Teaching Quality Forum (TQEF), where I am Vice-Convenor and am an experienced QAA Scotland Reviewer.

I am a Lecturer in the Department of Learning and Teaching Enhancement at Edinburgh Napier University.      


I teach on the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education programme (PgCert TSL) and the MSc in Blended and Online Education.      


I have taught at the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. My PhD, from the University of Glasgow, explored the interplay between mathematics and fiction in contemporary American literature. My research interests are similarly multidisciplinary; I try to combine literary, scientific, and pedagogical aspects in creative ways.

I am a Lecturer in the Department of Learning and Teaching Enhancement at Edinburgh Napier University.      


I teach on various DLTE programmes (Postgraduate Learning, Teaching & Assessment Practice in Higher EducationMSc Blended and Online EducationIntroduction to Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (International) (ILTHE) module), and am the mentoring lead for ENroute, our experiential route to HEA fellowship. I am also the institutional theme lead for the QAA Enhancement Theme Resilient Learning Communities.      


My background is in biomolecular sciences, and I bring my analytical approach to learning and teaching and academic development. My interests in this new field are very broad and include peer learning and ungrading.
