Industrial Action
We recognise both EIS and UNISON unions for the purpose of collective bargaining and negotiations regarding pay and associated terms and conditions for colleagues in Grades 2-7.
The University fully respects the right of colleagues to take industrial action and accepts that such action is not taken lightly; we are of course concerned by the potential impact any industrial action will have on our ability to meet our students’ needs.
We are keen to keep colleagues from across the University informed on the progress of discussions surrounding this dispute and we will continue to update this page with the latest information
UCU Action Update – effective 20 April 2023
The University and College Union (UCU) has informed us that they have asked their members to participate in industrial action termed Action Short of Strike (ASOS). This action is planned continuously from Thursday 20 April 2023 and will include:
• A marking and assessment boycott
• Working to contractual duties and not undertaking any voluntary activities
• Not covering for absent colleagues
• Not rescheduling lectures and classes cancelled due to strike action
• Removing uploaded materials related to, and/or not sharing materials related to lectures or classes that will be or have been cancelled as a result of strike action
Although we do not recognise UCU locally, we do fully respect the right of colleagues to take industrial action and accept that such action is not taken lightly. We also appreciate that many of our colleagues will be continuing to work normally, and we thank you for your continued contribution.
The ASOS mandate includes activities that would be viewed as a breach of contract which constitute partial performance, and our Industrial Action Policy rejects partial performance and, as such, pay deductions will be applied to those taking part. Given the serious implications this action will have on our students, for each day an individual participates in the marking and assessment boycott, 50% of the individual’s daily salary will be deducted. All deductions will continue until the individual returns to carrying out the full contractual elements within their role. We reserve the right to change this position and maintain the right to withhold up to 100% of pay.
What to do if you are or plan to participate in Action Short of Strike
You are legally obliged to confirm whether you are or have been participating in the marking and assessment boycott. Please update your HR Connect record if you are currently participating in action short of a strike. You should note that by completing this, you are confirming and accepting that by participating, this amounts to be a breach of contract and you will not be entitled to your normal contractual pay.
